In our Reception Class we all work together to provide a positive, caring, safe and stimulating environment for the children. We choose topics based on the children’s interests and provide a wide range of learning opportunities for the children as they explore, through play, the world around them. Through explorative play, children will learn fundamental mathematical and literacy skills as well as developing their confidence, communication and language and ability to work well with others. Our creative approach inspires children to learn, developing a positive approach to learning which will help ensure success as they embark on their educational journey throughout school. We encourage our children to be active learners, exploring the world through a range of indoor and outdoor experiences, developing their independence.
Children may bring a small healthy, nut-free snack for our morning break along with a bottle of water. Fruit will be on offer in the afternoons for all children.
Change of Clothes
Due to the excitement of a new area and activities to explore, children can sometimes become engrossed in what they are doing and leave things a little bit too late to get to the toilet resulting in toileting accidents. If possible please send your child with a change of clothes in their bag should any accidents occur.
This should consist of a change in:
socks or tights
trousers or skirt
shoes (if possible)
That way we can get them changed out of their wet things as quickly as possible so that they are comfortable.
P.E will take place on a Friday morning. Children are to come in to school on this day dressed ready for P.E. Our P.E kit consists of a house colour t-shirt (one will be given to your child in their first week of school) and navy/black shorts or jogging bottoms with trainers. Please ensure t-shirt’s, shorts and jogging bottoms are plain without any logos. In addition, can we please kindly ask that if your child has their ears pierced, can they please remove these prior to coming to school on P.E days, as unfortunately we are unable to remove them for them and this may result in them missing out on the fun.
Class Dojo is a free app you can download on to your phone. It is a fantastic way for you to keep in touch with what your child has been learning at school. As well as sharing information and photos of what we are doing in school, we also award children dojo points for positive behaviour and working hard. In Reception, when children reach 100 dojo points they will be able to select a prize from a range of treats to take home.
If there is anything you are unsure of or have concerns with, please just let us know. You can message me via Class Dojo with anything you wish to discuss. We want to make sure your child’s first year at school is a happy one not just for them but also for yourselves as parents.
Out of this World
We begin our learning this year with the theme Out of this World. Children will travel the galaxy, learning about the wonders of our solar system and space travel. They will develop their ability to think scientifically and ask questions about the world around them. In Phonics, children will learn ‘speed sounds,’ linking sounds to letters as well as learning how to segment and blend sounds for reading and writing. In Mathematics, we will focus on understanding the number system and consolidating our knowledge of numbers. We will also explore shape and measure, focusing on recognising and continuing repeating patterns.
The key books we will be reading are:
The Smeds and the Smoos by Julia Donaldson
How to Catch a Star by Oliver Jeffers
The Way Back Home by Oliver Jeffers
Whatever Next! by Jill Murphy
Welcome to Alien School by Caryl Hart and Ed Eaves
Unfortunately not the ones with chocolate chips.
