Today we were so very lucky to be invited for an exclusive visit by the Friends of Stapleford Miniature Railway (FSMR). We saw the operation of the signal box, had the workings of various locomotives explained (we had a turn at being the driver too !!) and had first hand experience of how it is so much easier to pull a truck full of gravel weighing the same as two cars on rails ! We also had two trips on the 1/5th scale model of the New York Central 6019 4-8-4 Niagara class express passenger locomotive around the two mile very scenic route - past a lake full of many breeds of bird, over a bridge and through a long dark tunnel! (see the picture of route below) What great fun!
The Stapleford Miniature Railway is not open all year round but has a special weekend coming up on 13/14th June. There will be attractions and refreshments. Entrance is free and there is plenty of parking.
They also have their annual Steam Rally on 29th - 31st August.
